US planes hit the POW camp, Stalag 315 Épinal on the Moselle river, that contained 3000 Indian POWs. When the bombs fell on May 11 1944 hundreds escaped through the breach. The swiss border was 100 kilometers to the south and after 5 days the escapees started streaming across the border. By the end of June almost 500 had slipped across the border.
