US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump visited India February 24 and 25. They went to Ahmedabad, Agra and Delhi. Since this is Trump’s first visit to India, the government tried very hard to impress him and spent crores of rupees in cleaning. The government tried to cover up everything that may portray the country in an unfavourable light. Isn’t this similar to what we all do when guests come at our house unannounced and we are forced to clean up our room. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation built a half kilometre, four-foot wall to hide around five hundred kutcha houses in the Dev Saran or the Saraniyavaas slum area. In short, the Ahmedabad government wants to hide the in the country by building a wall. But can a wall really hide the fact that India is home to 28 percent of the world's poor? Ahmedabad has a well known stray dog problem. Last year, AMC received over six hundred complaints of dog menace every month. People were scared to step out of their homes without a stick in fear of dogs away or even let children out of the house without supervision. More than 40 cases of dog bites had been reported in one year.
Despite multiple complaints to the AMC about the strays, all that the authorities did was vaccinate them and leave them there. Now that Trump participated in a 22 kilometre long roadshow in Ahmedabad with over one lakh people attending the event, the AMC clearly captured all stray dogs or bulls roaming the streets. The Gujarat government will be spending roughly 80 crores preparing for Trump's visit. The beautification process also includes painting walls with messages of harmony between the US and India.Trump also visited Agra. Agra underwent a facelift and beautification in just about 60 hours over 5 days. The horticulture department has placed 25,000 flower pots along the route. Electric poles and traffic lights have been decorated with a fresh coat of paint. Sewer openings have been plugged and hundreds of workers were hired to clean betel leaf or paan stains on the road. Additionally, all the shops on the route have been asked to install boards bearing the names in the same size and colour. The entire road has also been cleaned of litter.
The Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful monuments in India. Earlier tourists would scurry to the top of the Taj to get a spectacular view of the Yamuna River; Now nobody even dares because the Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers in the world and has a stench that almost makes it impossible to enjoy the beauty all around. 500 cusecs of water has been released into the Yamuna, so reduce the stink of the water.
The Taj Mahal itself was cleaned. The Taj was scrubbed from top to bottom. The two tombs inside the Taj haven’t been cleaned in 300 years. Even those were cleaned for Trump. Anyone who's ever visited the monument would testify that the Taj Mahal is home to hundreds of monkeys.Trump's guards accompanying him and Melania would be well-armed with slingshots to drive monkeys away. Millions of tourists visit the Taj every year but nothing was ever done to make the experience better. Thankfully due to Trump’s visit at least future tourists can enjoy it.It is very surprising to see the Indian government working hard to clean and beautify India. Millions of Indian suffer due to the garbage and the various problems. People die due to the smallest of potholes. But the government does nothing. Trump's two day visit completely changed these cities. I am sure you all must be hoping Trump travels all over India so that all our lives become better.
