Because I couldn't find any direct results for my particular model, I followed what I could from dash removal instructions and other videos from owners with earlier models.

The main purpose of this video is a more detailed description of what I ran into while replacing the heater core, which once you get the "box" out, is probably the easiest thing to replace on this car. It's two retaining prongs you push outward and it just slides out.

I don't see why they couldn't have just made an access plate under the dash. Oh well. Thanks Volkswagen for ruining my weekend.
