The nocebo effect is the causation of sickness by the expectation of sickness. It is the reverse of the placebo effect - a beneficial effect caused by the expectation of a beneficial effect. Each of these concepts highlight just how powerful our minds are. Our expectations become our reality.
One element of the nocebo effect is HOW we attribute our experiences. What do we think is causing our symptoms? In the case of concussion, some patients have a tendency to attribute ALL of their symptoms to their concussion while completely ignoring other possible causes. Example: Feeling tired? Many people feel tired on a regular basis. A healthy person just says "I'm tired" whereas a concussion patient says "ever since this concussion, I'm frequently tired". The truth is...we're all frequently tired!
