Should You Quit Growth Stock Investing

Cathie Wood, ARK Invest, you, me any growth stock investor out there right now is feeling the pain. The stock market correction is here, and growth stocks have been hit worse than any other equity out there. Especially the high risk, early development growth stocks that are relying heavily on favourably stock market and macroeconomic conditions to keep their company valuations afloat.

The Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting just took place, and Warren Buffet had some very interesting thoughts on how he felt Wall Street had turned the stock market into a casino. Now Buffet didn’t quite elaborate on specific examples, but perhaps he’s referring to the insane number of IPO’s we saw in 2021, which are now trading at a fraction of the value of their IPO price. Perhaps the stock market has become a breeding ground for high stakes speculation, rather than the sound methodical investment approach that Warren Buffet has breached for many decades.

One example of where a stock has completely underperformed is Lucid Motors. Another “hot” stock after its IPO which has been badged as a potential competitor for Tesla. However, this promising company has not lived up to its expectations (so far anyway!). With a stock price that has cratered and a company that’s nowhere near the same level of revenue that the likes of larger EV competitors have. Its brought into question the very meaning of company valuations, and whether the 2020/2021 stock market bubble has now been popped with valuations coming back down to somewhat normal levels.

Here is the dilemma, continue investing in growth stocks whilst they continue to fall in value in the hope that they go on to recover and grow exponentially in the next 5 years. Or, do you stick to the good old fashioned blue chip stocks, perhaps an S&P500 ETF and ride this one out with some more stable, and perhaps reliable returns. They do say fortune favours the brave, but picking the right stocks to realise that fortune is a completely different ballgame.
