Supermarket Shopping in Panama City, Panama - International Living

I get asked...frequently...why I choose to live in Panama City. As a self-confessed foodie, one of the things that makes me happy is the variety of food available here. It's a common misconception that moving to the region means having to give up all the familiar brands you loved back home.
In Panama City that's not true (probably part of the reason it's known as Central America's only First World city). Supermarket chains like Riba Smith have always featured a good selection of imports or specialty items—possibly because Panama has always had a large international population. It all started with the many Americans who came here to populate bases here when the Panama Canal was under U.S. administration.
The waterway reverted to Panama in 1999, but old habits die hard, and Panamanians were accustomed to choice. So the shops not only continued to offer familiar North American brands, they began to expand their offerings. Store owners realize that locals and expats here want to keep up with the times and have access to the items they read about in magazines or heard about on t.v...newfangled "super foods" or supplements like chia seeds or simply more organically grown produce. These days, anything I want, I can almost always find. Join me as I take you on a video tour of my neighborhood supermarket...you may be surprised by all the familiar items!
