Mar Tintoré, MD, PhD, Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain, and President of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS), shares her highlights from this year's ECTRIMS Congress. One of the main discussion topics at the meeting was the classification of multiple sclerosis (MS). Currently, it is considered that the progressive phase follows the relapsing/remitting phase; however, several studies have now shown that progression starts much earlier, even before the onset of the disease, which has resulted in a new term in MS research: PIRA, or progression independent of relapse activity. Regarding the treatment of MS, highlights included the treatment of patients as early as possible with high-efficacy therapies, addressing the inflammatory component from the onset, and the results from a clinical trial of dimethyl fumarate that showed that the oral treatment delayed the first attack of MS symptoms in patients with radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS). Pregnancy planning in patients with MS and the importance of environmental factors were also the focus of the experts during the ECTRIMS Congress.
