STORYLINE
An Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman said initial reports indicated three or four suicide bombers and at least two gunmen had attacked a Western-style hotel in Kabul on Tuesday night.
Sediq Sediqqi said that all the bombers either blew themselves up or were killed.
Two gunmen continue to fire from the roof of the hotel, he said.
Sediqqi said there were both foreign and Afghan guests staying at the hotel, but they were safe in their rooms as the shooting continued outside.
Streets leading to the Inter-Continental Hotel were blocked.
The hotel sits on a hill overlooking Kabul. The scene was dark as the electricity was off at the hotel.
A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to The Associated Press.
The Inter-Continental - known widely as the "Inter-Con" - was once part of an international chain. But when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, the hotel was left to fend for itself.
The hotel, used by Western journalists during the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, has been targeted before.
