This is the unboxing of a Tascam DR-680MkII which has only been out a few days. I can say the sound quality is leagues better than the original dr-680 which had slightly noisy pre-amps. In this video I just do the unboxing and a quick look over. It is an 8 channel recorder / mixer (4 xlr, 2 tsr, 2 analog or digital line in) but since most film makers just need the xlr ins for boom mics and lavs, I consider it more of a 4 channel. A boom on 1, and lavs on 2,3,and 4. For music recording you could use the extra channels. and it mixes down automatically to a two channel stereo file while also keeping the individual tracks. This is just the unboxing - the full review video will be in p2
I have been recording with it and can say the new premium HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) Mic preamps are fantastic even with very low output dynamic mics like the shure sm58 or beta 58 and with a high end phantom powered boom mic like the Sanken CS3e you have full high end hollywood quality sound. This is the closest you will get without adding another zero and buying sound devices 702 or higher but quite honestly the sound quality is amazing I really could not tell the difference except the sound devices has a better headphone output and build. For an 8 channel recorder (really 4 to 6) this is amazing. Just wish each channel button came out and you could mix in real time rather than having to hit the button of the channel and use the universal knob. Note THIS is just the unboxing the full review will be posted in part two along with sound clips. Sorry for the sometimes out of focus. My GH3 was acting up with the macro lens.
