A beautiful sunny Spring morning at WWT Welney has been captured here to show you how peaceful and yet full of life the reserve is. This footage was taken from our Reedbed hide looking back across to the main observatory. Soon the front of the main observatory will be filled with House martins building up their nests above the windows.
All the hides look out on pools of deep water and shallow flooded wet grassland which is filling up with birds feeding on migration like the black-tailed godwits or those who are claiming territories like the lapwing, redshank and avocets.
Staff at WWT Welney work hard to preserve and improve the habitat on the section of the Ouse washes that we are responsible for. But heavy rains have hampered these efforts over the last 12 months; finally the washes are looking as they should do, ready for the start of a much anticipated breeding season. Restored wetland habitat outside of the Ouse washes (next to the visitor centre) played a vital role in prioviding areas for ground nesting birds last year and is again full of activity now that Spring is finally here!
