Storm Desmond has caused widespread flooding, road closures and left tens of thousands of homes without power in the northwest of England and parts of Scotland.
The storm brought record levels of rain over the weekend to the county of Cumbria within the space of 24 hours, with precipitation reaching a high of 334 millimeters. More than 100 areas in England and Wales and over 20 areas of Scotland issued flood warnings.
"We came Saturday afternoon and moved lots of things because water was about four inches deep, and by the time we left it was eight inches deep, and we thought that's as deep as it's going to get. But sometime during the night, there was a massive swirl of water that came down from the hillside, came rushing down here. It's taken all the cobble stones up from there and came here. The place was covered in mud, cobble stones and filled the garages," said a female resident surnamed Greenbank, in Kendal.
The floodwater inundated neighborhoods and swamped sports grounds. By Monday morning, about 15 flood alarms had still not been removed.
Dozens of train services have been delayed or cancelled and the Highways Agency reported that several major roads and some motorway junctions were closed due to flooding, with clear up work continuing on Tuesday.
Some 60,000 homes in Lancashire suffered power cuts after the flood defences at an electricity substation were breached. Some 1,500 of them have now had power restored but schools in the area remain closed.
