From wikipedia:
It is a species of fox typical of the Southern Cone of South America. Its geographical distribution occupies a strip on both sides of the Andes Mountains and mainly covers Argentina and Chile from the parallel of 17ºS to 54° S (Tierra del Fuego). In Argentina, it inhabits the western semi-arid region of the country, from the Andean foothills to the meridian of 66° W. Towards the south of the Río Grande this distribution expands until it reaches the Atlantic coast. In Chile, it is distributed throughout almost the entire country. It was introduced in Tierra del Fuego with the intention of controlling the European rabbit and in the Malvinas Islands on some small islands in San Julián Bay.8 The presence of the gray fox (Lycalopex griseus Gray, 1837) is supported on the southern coast of the Peru based on external and cranial morphological information. This species is similar in size to L. sechurae (Thomas, 1900) but can be distinguished by a greater length of the snout and a smaller width of the skull; This difference is supported in a Principal Component Analysis. It is suggested that the gray fox population in Peru could constitute a new subspecies of L. griseus as it is located further north of its traditionally known distribution and separated from other subspecies by the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, a notable biogeographic barrier.
