While spearfishing on a reef off of a Island that I have never been to before somewhere in the Western Pacific, I made a very foolish choice. I was looking down the reef's ledge to see if I could do a drop on a nice coral trout. Next thing I know there was a massive dogtooth tuna right underneath me. I decided to drop down to around 50' to check it out. Meanwhile, I am telling myself not to shoot it due to its size and that fact that I was not equipped to handle this fish on a reel. That's right, no float and floatline, only a reel. Well, the damn thing swam right up to me and the Good Idea Fairy told me to try to shoot it by stoning it right in the head. I shot and the shot placement was low, right in the jaw. The dogtooth shook head several times trying to get rid of the spear shaft. Finally, the tuna made a run and tangled up on a coral head at 28m. I was happy because it could not run and continue to drag me through the water to my death! As we went to put another shot in it, a shark came to eat the tuna. The dogtooth saw this shark and fought extremely hard, bending the shaft in half and ripping one of the floppers off of the shaft entirely. I realized what a foolish choice this action was because it put myself and my friends in danger. Moral of the story is BE PREPARED! AND IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED, DO NOT BE STUPID AND PUT YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS AT RISKS BY SHOOTING A BIG FISH WITHOUT THE CORRECT SETUP.
