After a strenuous ascent, the poets come to the surface and find themselves on the shore of a hilly island in the middle of the Ocean, which represents the Purgatory.
This island was created when Lucifer crashed into the Earth, and it’s divided into the ante-purgatory, the real purgatory and the earthly paradise.
Dante and Virgil wash themselves from the Infernal dirt, and begin to climb the Purgatory Mountain, which will eventually lead them to Heaven...
