Alī bin Abī Thalib (Arabic: لي طالب, Persian: لی ابو الب) (born around 13 Rajab 23 SH/599 AD – died 21 Ramadan 40 Hijri/661 AD) was the fourth ruling caliph and the first Shia Imam. He was one of the first followers of Islam and one of the main companions of the Prophet. Genealogically, 'Ali was a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. 'Ali's marriage to Fatimah az-Zahra also made him the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad.
As one of the early followers of Islam, Ali has been involved in various major roles since the time of the prophethood, even though he is relatively young when compared to the other main companions of the Prophet. Ali participated in all wars, except for the Battle of Tabuk, the bearer of the banner, also served as secretary and messenger of the Prophet. Ali was also appointed leader of the army in the Battle of Khaibar.
After the death of the Prophet Muhammad, Ali was appointed as caliph or leader of the Muslims after Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman. In the Sunni point of view, Ali and his three predecessors are classified as Khulafaur Rashidin. On the other hand, the Shi'a group views that 'Ali, who should have inherited the leadership of the Muslims after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, for their interpretation of the incident of Ghadir Khumm, made the leadership of the three previous caliphs illegitimate. The reign of 'Ali was one of the most difficult periods in the history of Islam because that was when the first civil war broke out within the Muslim community which began with the assassination of Uthman bin 'Affan, the third caliph. Despite differences of opinion regarding 'Ali's status and his right to rule over Muslims, Sunnis and Shiites agree on his pious and just personality.
