(29 Apr 2015) Thousands of protesters marched on the residence of the Turkish ambassador in Buenos Aires on Tuesday to call for recognition of the 1915 mass killing of Armenians as genocide.
The protesters, both Argentines and members of the country's Armenian diaspora, marched with flags and banners blaming Turkey for the massacre of up to 1.5 (m) million Armenians by Ottoman Turks, in what is widely viewed as the first genocide of the 20th century.
"I know that my family doesn't go more than three generations back, they don't exist," said 34-year old Romina Perperean, and Argentine Armenian, adding that many people's ancestors were "wiped off the face of the earth."
Turkey denies that the deaths constituted genocide but on the recent centenary of the massacre a number of world leaders or parliaments made statements affirming the killings as such.
Kissag Mouradian, Archbishop of Armenian Apostolic Church in Argentina, addressed the protesters on Tuesday night and called on other world leaders to have the courage demonstrated by Pope Francis, who used an April 12 mass to label the massacre as a genocide.
