I hope to show you how I care for 10 koi long term in a 50 gallon tank. In this video I demonstrate how I use of my gravel vacuum to syphon out dirty water along with the debris located in the gravel bed which is filled with nitrification bacteria, which remain for the most part on the individual surfaces of gravel. This is a huge surface area and in my aquarium it can handle the incredible amount of ammonia and nitrogen compounds that are created by such a large number of koi. I am able to refill my aquarium without any water treatment because it is well water and my fish are acclimated to it. I do a large three quarter partial water change and usually only do them once a month.
I do not recommend keeping koi in an aquarium. I have kept fish in aquariums for more than 60 years and I wanted to see if it is true that Koi continue to grow regardless of the size of their aquarium or pond size. So far I am documenting that they do not continue to grow anywhere close to the normal growth rates which I see in all my other koi when given adequate space, water quality and food. I do not know if this occurs in other species of fish, but I certainly see it with my 10 koi.
