September is the month to get on top of your herbaceous borders, especially your early flowering plants which by now have set seed and can be cut hardback.
It is also a great opportunity to apply fresh top dressings of garden compost to replace the nutrients you are removing in the cut back material.
Fresh edging, top dressing, and a tidy up will restore the order to a scrappy looking border now is a great time to get on top of these jobs before the weather breaks.
