The beginnings of welger are in 1856, where Gottfried Welger in Seehausen in Magdeburg opened a locksmith. In the 1890s in Seehausen was the first plant for agricultural machinery. With his two older sons Carl and Emil, he led the company, which has operated under a "Brothers Welger Maschinenfabrik". The Wolfenbütteler "Welger Maschinenfabrik Brothers" was founded in 1899 by the younger brothers Franz and Gustav Welger founded.
The aim of the Wolfenbüttel undertaking was the development and manufacture of balers for agriculture. The brothers Welger had the idea to automate the agricultural work. At that time, such as harvesting, work was painstakingly crafted. So the first straw press was invented in 1901 with an automatic binding device. It was followed by numerous innovations and patents, as the pendulum ram compactor WSP (1932) or the first baler AP 15 (1950). From the 1950s they went on to also fertilizer and manure spreader and loader wagon manufacture. The need for stationary presses for recyclable materials and the growing market for industrial recycling Welger opened in the early 1970s another field. In 1972 Welger brought a stationary press for packaging materials such as paper and cardboard packaging on the market. In the same year was awarded the patent for Welger round balers, which has been licensed to major manufacturers of agricultural equipment worldwide.
In 1994 the family moved from the family Welger back, and thus paved the way for a takeover by the Dutch Lely Group . The Rudolph & Sohn GmbH took over in 1996, the manufacture, distribution and service of the company Welger complete vehicle program into exclusive license.
Through a management buy-out ten years after the takeover by Lely Welger gained its independence. The private investor group Andlinger & Company, Inc. took over in 2006 the majority of the Welger Maschinenfabrik GmbH, while Lely shopped itself again as a minority shareholder in the company.
2005 generated more than 350 employees with balers and compactors for industrial packaging material around € 60 million.
Within the Group, the subsidiaries Welger "Welger Vertriebs GmbH", "Welger Recycling Engineering GmbH" in Wolfenbüttel and exist "Welger surface GmbH" in Hannover .
Through long-term distribution agreement for Welger balers and wrappers has a worldwide distribution network. The international orientation is reflected in an export ratio of 85%. Agriculture Welger are used in 50 countries.
2008 Lely Group from the Netherlands and the U.S. company Vermeer accept. Lely holds three-quarters of the shares and Vermeer quarter. But Vermeer has the option to increase its share to 50%. The products will now be offered depending on region under the brand name Lely and Vermeer. ...........................
