The square lashing, unlike the diagonal lashing, is load bearing (it can support weight). Using 3 WRAPS (securing the poles) and 3 FRAPS (cinching the ropes) it secures 2 poles together at a right angle. An application of the square lashing could be securing a rung to a ladder.
