Fatih Sultan Mehmet II (Arabic: محمد الفاتح الثاني) or Mehmet the Conqueror (March 30, 1432 Adrianople - May 3, 1481) was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1444 to 1446 and again from 1451 to 1481. He was the seventh Ottoman sultan. Mehmet turned the Ottoman Empire into a world power and thus acquired the nickname Fâtih (Turkish for conqueror). He successfully continued the expansion and consolidation policy that began under his father Sultan Murat II. Mehmet conquered Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) and put an end to the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire). Mehmet II is a national hero in Turkey🇹🇷.
