"Our governments have asked us to leave Afghanistan with all our nationals. Unfortunately, eight detainees have to stay behind. But we have provided for them legal assistance and we will closely monitor the ongoing trial from Islamabad and to also take care there of any consular assistance possible. We will be in contact with the Taliban embassy here and we hope that the trial will soon be ended."

Everyone's doing their own thing, they are working away hard. Just the government offices this morning were a little bit quiet, but that might be just because people are away. (Question: When do you hope to go back?) We hope in a week, but we don't know. As soon as things have settled down we'd like to go back."

Pakistan has been extending co-operation to international efforts to combat terrorism in the past and will continue to do so in the future. All countries must join hands in this common cause. I wish to ensure President Bush once again and the U-S government of our unstinted co-operation in the fight against terrorism."

STORYLINE:
Aid workers and diplomats arrived in Islamabad on Thursday after fleeing Afghanistan amid fears of a potential U-S reprisal for Tuesday's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
Members of non-governmental organisations, U-N personnel and three diplomats, who have been attempting to give legal assistance to eight foreign aid workers currently on trial in Kabul, flew into the airport in Pakistan's capital.
Relatives of the detainees, who had been in Afghanistan to try to secure their release, accompanied the diplomats out of Afghanistan.
Aid workers reported that Kabul was calm, although there were rumours of possible U-S-led military strikes.
U-S officials suspect millionaire Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, who is being sheltered by the Taliban and is living somewhere in Afghanistan, of being behind Tuesday's attacks.
Foreigners in the city have been growing increasingly concerned about their safety in the event of any retaliation against Afghanistan.
