On September 29, 2006, Gol Transportes Aereos Flight 1907, a 3 week old Boeing 737 was a flight between Manaus, Brazil to Rio de Janeiro with a stopover in Brasilia. In total, the jet is carrying a total of 154 passengers and crew. Also in the air is a private Embraer Legacy 600 jet carrying 7 people flying between Sao Jose and Manaus.
The Crash:
Gol Flight 1907 had just departed Manaus at 3:35pm, en route to Brasilia, while the Legacy jet had taken off from São José dos Campos at 2:51pm. Then, at 4:56pm both planes were flying at the same altitude and both planes collide, almost head-on. The left winglet of the Legacy shredded about half of the 737's left wing. This left the Gol flight uncontrollable and caused it to go in a violent nosedive. The flight span out of control which led to an in-flight breakup. All 154 people on board died in the crash. The Embraer jet managed to keep flying on, despite serious damage to its left wing. It eventually made an emergency landing at a military base known as Cachimbo Airport. All 7 people on the Legacy left the plane uninjured. The collision was caused by the mixture of an ATC error which cleared the Legacy jet to the same altitude and same air corridor as Flight 1907 and the inoperative TCAS system on the Legacy jet.
