In order to apply for the PMP exam, you will need 35 "Contact Hours"
All PMP exam applicants, regardless of their level of education or amount of project management experience are required to have 35 contact hours before registering for the PMP exam.
So, what is a contact hour?
A contact hour is equal to one hour of formal and documented project management related training or education. Contact hours can be earned by attending any training that is relevant to project management, either in a live classroom setting or online.
The training must be documented and verifiable. This means that you must be able to provide proof that the training exists and that you have completed it.But this does not mean that the training must provide the documents. You can document your own. The training must be provided by a professional or a professional organization.
You can earn contact hours from schools and universities as well as commercial organizations that specialize in project management. You can even earn contact hours from instruction by professionals that teach or work in the field.
What is considered “Project Management education and training”.Project management training can consists of seminars, webinars, videos, podcasts, online eLearning and university courses.
Almost any kind of training can be submitted for contact hours as long as it is:
-Relevant
-Documented
-Verifiable
Do I have to pay for contact hours?NO! There are many resources that you can use to get contact hours for free. In fact, you may already have the 35 contact hours you need to register for the PMP exam. Lets discuss this more in depth.
PMI does not require that contact hours must be attainted through formal face-to-face lectures. You can even earn all 35 contact hours online.
There are several types of online education that may be submitted for contact hours including online video lessons, podcast and webinars. Most of these can be found online for free with a simple google search.
Simply type “free project management webinars” into your browser you will see the hundreds of free resources that are available for you to use.
Do I need to get a 35 hour certificate to verify that you have earned contact hours? NO! You do not need a 35 hour certificate. Your 35 Contact hours can be accumulated by combining all the training you have completed.
For example:
If you’ve attended:
-Two 4-hour seminars (8 hours = 8 contact hours)
-One 8-week university course (2 hours per week for 8 weeks = 16 contact hours)
-Five 1-hour webinars (5 contact hours)
-and the PMBOK portion of this course, (6 contact hours)
You have already earned 35 contact hours!

Remember: There is no timeframe associated with the 35 contact hour requirement.You should document all your project management education, regardless of when you attended it.
Any project management-related training you took in the past can count towards the PMI's requirement for contact hours.
There is no expiration date on project management training! Just remember: the coursework must be complete at the time of application.
