Bathroom renovations can deliver a great return on your investment. They can also be a hefty project, though, so a little planning can go a long way.
Step 1: Decide on a budget
Decide on a budget. Things can get out of hand with home renovations. The costs can add up quickly, so decide how much you can spend before you even begin.
Tip
Use give-and-take with things you want. Need the more expensive tub? Then buy a more basic vanity or toilet.
Step 2: Examine the space
Measure and draw up the space before dreaming up a design. You don't want to get your heart set on a shower that won't fit.
Tip
Don't move plumbing. Most of the time, the expensive of moving a plumbing line, like the one that leads in and out of your toilet, is not worth it.
Step 3: Make a list
Is the renovation as simple as a new coat of paint or as big as installing new fixtures? Make a very detailed list of all the items you want so you don't get overwhelmed.
Step 4: Shop around
If you are using a contractor, shop around. Compare price quotes and make a list of recommended contractors. Consider them all carefully before choosing one.
Tip
Don't always go with the lowest price or first contractor you find. Make sure to check for references from past customers.
Step 5: Check for legality
Make sure everything you are planning to do is legal. You may need permits if plumbing is involved in your renovation. Your contractor should know this information.
Step 6: Be prepared to wait
Get an estimate on the time that renovations will take, but know that they often take longer than the contractor's original estimate. Remember--good things come to those who wait!
