Tenor Choir Practice: KV 427 -9 “Credo in unum Deum” from Mozart’s “Great Mass in C minor” (Große Messe in c-Moll), KV 427 (K. 417a). The lively ‘Credo in unum Deum’ contains a fanfare introduction accompanied by oboes and strings. The orchestra repeats part of the opening as the chorus enters. The Credo developes through several key changes until finally arriving back at C major. The chorus alternates in fugue style until arriving and singing in unison the text, “descendit de coelis,” which means ”down from heaven.” This section of the text is repeated and appropriately the melody line moves downward drawing the movement to a close.
Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem,
factorem coeli et terrae, visibilium omnium, et invisibilium.
Et in unum Dominum Jesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum,
I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven.
