Around a year ago I was walking through a model train shop and I stumbled across something unusual, it was a mid 80s Lionel GS4 locomotive someone had repainted to suit a Canadian National paint scheme. This locomotive was only being sold for $30 as it was not in working order.
Although being completely un-prototypical the look still caught my eye and I decided to purchase it. Unfortunately the design of this Lionel is mechanically identical to Bachmann locomotives of the same era which happens to be one of the worst drive systems ever created.
Getting it running again would be a challenge since the nylon axles which hold the wheels together tend to crack and allow the drivers to become un-quartered. Getting them back to 90 degrees is tricky and if the axles aren't glued correctly, the wheels will fall out of place again.
