Jember Fashion Carnaval (Indonesian Karnaval Busana Jember) is an annual carnival held in Jember, East Java. Officially, it is spelled Jember Fashion Carnaval; the word carnival is spelled carnaval here, most likely due to a mix-up with the Indonesian spelling karnaval or an influence from the Dutch spelling carnaval. Jember Fashion Carnival has nothing to do with the Christian pre-Lenten festival, but is more of a general celebration, roughly in the Brazilian style, with a procession of dancers dressed in extravagant costumes and an emphasis on the traditional Indonesian motif.
The carnival generally used a world-themed fashion or a nature-inspired theme. Preparation began months in advance, and participants volunteered for the event.
Dynand Fariz, a local fashion designer and educator, came up with the idea for Jember Fashion Carnaval. Initially, Pekan Mode was a world-themed fashion week. Dynand Fariz was imprisoned in 2001. The fashion week was held in and around Jember in 2002. This sparked the idea for Jember Fashion Carnaval. The first Jember Fashion Carnaval took place on January 1, 2003, the same day Jember City was founded. In August 2003, another Jember Fashion Carnaval took place. Since then, the carnival has been held in August.
