The 2023 Fox Profame RS RTRN has arrived to replace my 2021 Fox Proframe full-face helmet. Facebook advertisements hit me at a weak point and this helmet just looked too cool, so I impulse-bought it.
The new Fox Proframe RS helmet is aimed at the aggressive mountain biker who wants the latest features, tech, and design.
Comparing it to my previous 2021 Fox Proframe, there are a lot of new bits to love. Here are my personal highlights:
1. Safety - Gone is the yellow MIPS liner. Replacing it is the new MIPS Integra Split. There are now two layers of foam of different densities and types. The inner liner is EPP and is designed to take multiple low-speed hits. The outer layer is made of EPS which is designed to crack when it absorbs hits from more significant, high-speed impacts. Hits that could really rattle the CPU.
2. Fit - Unlike the previous model where you can get the fit close to perfect, the new helmet features a BOA Fit System. It takes some getting used to, but I appreciate being able to loosen the BOA knob to get the helmet on, and then wrenching it down for a tight fit.
3. Odor-resistant padding!!!! Let's face it, long days in a full-face, especially for those of us that aren't exactly models of fitness... can get really sweaty. Time will tell, but Fox claims that the innards of this helmet have an Ionic+ anti-microbial liner to reduce odor. I'll keep ya posted on that.
CONS:
-Some of the inside pads had fallen off of the inner helmet. I had to scour the internet for close-up pictures to figure out where they went and how to reattach them. I nearly didn't catch that they were in the box. The attachment process with the velcro was also tediously cumbersome (annoying).
-Price: Even with the coupon, after taxes and shipping, this helmet cost me $342.35. You can find the older model Proframe and similar helmets from other brands for significantly less.
-The "Removeable" GoPro mount: Once you've attached it, removing it will be nearly impossible without likely breaking the visor. I could be wrong on that, but I'm also skeptical of the quality of visor-mounted footage. I plan to take one for the team here and try it out. Be on the lookout for that video in the near future.
