The great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius wrote his great and only violin concerto in 1904. The concerto 1st movement certainly carries a dark and grave tone, but with bouts of melodic lyricism. One could say it almost evokes an image of an icy Nordic landscape, intermixed with nostalgic moments of expressive emotion.
