北, 경의선•동해선 남북 연결도로 폭파 의도는?
Welcome to Within The Frame, where we delve into the most up-to-date issues across the globe.
I'm Kim Mok-yeon.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula continue to escalate as North Korea today detonated roads and railways connected to South Korea.
Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff says the North blew up roads along the Gyeongui and Donghae railway lines north of the military demarcation line, which were once seen as symbols of inter-Korean cooperation.
The Gyeongui line connects Paju in South Korea to Kaesong in the North, while the Donghae line runs along the eastern coasts of both Koreas.
In response, the South Korean military fired shots south of the MDL, which is located within the demilitarized zone that separates the two Koreas.
The latest move comes as North Korea has been taking steps to completely separate its territory from the South.
So, what does the North want to pursue ultimately, and what does this mean for regional security?
For answers to these questions, we invite Dr. Go Myong-hyun, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for National Security Strategy here in the studio with us.
Welcome to the program Dr. Go.
We are also joined by Evans Revere, Former Acting Assistant Secretary of State and Nonresident Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at Brookings Institute.
Great to have you, Mr. Revere.
(GO) 1. Let's begin with Dr. Go, so North Korea detonated parts of the Gyeongui and Donghae roads north of the Military Demarcation Line today.
What does this symbolize? What message does North Korea want to send?
(REVERE) 2. Now to Mr. Revere, How do you read into the timing? What could this latest series of actions mean for regional stability?
(GO) 3. Prior to this, the North claimed South Korea infiltrated its territory three times this month using drones carrying leaflets.
There's ongoing debate regarding this as Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff did not confirm such claims.
As an expert in the field Dr. Go, do you believe this to be true?
(REVERE) 4. Leader Kim Jong-un held a rare security meeting over this issue, vowing immediate military action.
Mr. Revere, why is the regime taking such a big action regarding the issue?
(REVERE) 5.Then what do you think of the possibilities for further military provocations from North Korea, and what form of provocations could we expect?
(GO) 6. Now with this series of actions, what exactly does North Korea want Dr. Go?
(REVERE) 7. North Korea has been launching balloon campaigns since May, with some of these balloons reportedly equipped with GPS technology. Mr. Revere, what do you think is the intention behind these actions?
(GO) 8. Dr. Go, as North Korea continues efforts to advance its military technology, including missile capabilities, how concerned should the international community be about their potential reach and effectiveness?
(REVERE) 9. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell is scheduled to visit South Korea on Wednesday (tomorrow) for a trilateral meeting with Japan and South Korea’s foreign affairs officials. Mr. Revere, what key issues do you anticipate will be addressed during these discussions?
(REVERE) 10. How do you think global events, such as the Ukraine conflict or developments in the Indo-Pacific, are influencing North Korea’s strategy and calculations?
(GO) 11. Before we let you go Dr. Go, despite the current tensions, is there a feasible path for renewed dialogue with North Korea? What would be the essential prerequisites for such discussions?
Alright, we'll have to conclude our discussion here.
Thank you for your insights Mr. Revere, and Dr. Go.
Now that wraps up our program for tonight, thank you so much for joining us.
We'll be back tomorrow at 8:30PM Korea time. Until then, good bye.
