How to apply Foliar Fertilizers to Bananas? Lakatan Banana Farming
This video shows how to apply foliar fertilizers to lakatan banana. Foliar feeding is one of the best techniques of feeding plants by applying liquid fertilizer directly to the leaves. Plants are able to absorb essential elements through their leaves. The absorption takes place through their stomata and also through their epidermis.
Fertilizers are vital to plant growth as it contains elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and others to supplement required elements found naturally in soil. Application of foliar fertilizers to bananas is every 15 days or every month. It is best to apply foliar fertilizers early morning around 5 o clock or late afternoon at 5 pm onwards.
How to Apply Foliar Fertilizers?
1. Prepare a mixture of fertilizers. In our case, we are using the Growmore Fertilizers 20-20-20 Balanced Formula. This is a 100% soluble fertilizer concentrate which dissolves in water. Growmore Foliar Fertilizers can be applied to field crops such as rice and corn; Fruit trees such as mango, coffee, cacao and to our bananas. We can also apply foliar to our vegetables such as tomatoes and cabbage.
2. Using a standard 16 liters of knapsack sprayer, add the soluble foliar fertilizers to our knapsack. Dosage is 8 to 10 table spoons (tbsps) of growmore fertilizers.
3. Pour water to our knapsack so that the soluble foliar powder will be mixed accordingly.
4. We can also add insecticides or pesticides to our foliar mixture to save our resources.
5. Spray the mixture to our banana plants. During foliar feeding, it is good to practice distant spraying so that our banana plants can absorb the nutrients easily.
6. Interval of spray is every 15 days or you can apply foliar fertilizers every month.
We can also make our own mixture using the following fertilizers:
1. Ammonium sulfate, ferrous sulfate, magnesium sulfate, zinc sulfate and caustic soda.
Foliar Fertilizers vs. Basal Fertilizers(Application of Fertilizers through the Soil)
With foliar fertilizers, plants absorption is faster as the banana plants can absorb immediately the nutrients through the mixture spray. Whereas in basal fertilizers, it takes time before the plants can absorb the nutrients from the soil.

1. Prepare a mixture of fertilizers. In our case, we are using the urea and ammonium sulfate. Urea contains 46% of nitrogen while ammonium sulfate's nitrogen is 21%.
2. Distance of the application of the fertilizers must be 1 to 2 feet from the pseudo stem of the banana.
3. Dig a crescent like or letter C hole at the right side of the plant.
4. Apply the mixture of fertilizers.
When the banana plant absorbs the fertilizers, it will facilitate its growth and vegetation process.
