SSI vs SSDI - Social Security Disability Comparison (What Makes Them Different?). In this comparison video I will talk about SSI vs SSDI.
So, the main difference between them is eligibility or Who the program is for.
Supplementary Security Income is a federal benefit program that gives financial assistance to citizens who are blind, have a disability, have a low income, or are over the age of sixty-five years. Furthermore, SSI has no work-related requirements to qualify for the program. On the other hand, Social Security Disability Insurance provides financial assistance to disabled citizens who have paid into the Social Security system for at least ten years.
Financial Benefits
Currently, the standard monthly payments from SSI stand at $943 for an individual and $1,415 for couples. It's important to note that SSI payments are reduced by any other income the beneficiary receives from other sources. SSDI currently offers $1,537 per month, and the maximum amount a beneficiary can get is $3,627 per month.
SSDI, is, therefore, more beneficial.
Healthcare access
As soon as, a person begins receiving SSI benefits, they automatically qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid is a healthcare program that provides comprehensive coverage to its recipients. On the other hand, SSDI beneficiaries qualify for Medicare, which begins after twenty-four months have elapsed since the SSDI benefits began. Medicare is a health program that currently only provides routine hospital services.
SSI offers access to a more comprehensive healthcare program.
The time it takes to receive the benefits.
With SSI, benefits stream in a month after submitting your application. Also, SSI does not provide back payments. For SSDI, one has to wait for five months before the benefits begin. Contrary to SSI, SSDI provides back payments for up to twelve months from the date of application into the program.
SSI offers funds quicker
But do they have any similarities?
Yes, they do. The two are similar, in that, both are associated with a health insurance program.
So, to sum up, which is better – SSI or SSDI
What I like about SSI, is the inclusivity it has, for citizens from all backgrounds. SSI, not only helps disabled people, but also needy ones with no work credit. This aspect of SSI makes it very accessible to many citizens if not all.
On the other hand, SSDI provides more financial benefits. SSDI offers more money in their monthly payments and has a back payment feature that would be a lifesaver for many in financial distress due to disability.
Both programs are great, but SSI is the winner because it is more inclusive and accessible to many citizens compared to SSDI.
