Machu Picchu was a city of the Inca Empire. Machu Picchu is located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes Mountains in southern Peru.
Because the Spanish never discovered Machu Picchu when they conquered the Inca in the 1500s, Machu Picchu is sometimes called the "lost city".
Machu Picchu means “old mountain” in the native language of the Incas.
Around 600 years ago, before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, the Incas were the largest society in South America. The Incas did not have a written form of their language, so historians are not quite sure what Machu Picchu was used for.
It is believed Machu Picchu was constructed and used during the rule of Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui (1438-1471) and Túpac Inca Yupanqui (1472-1493)
Machu Picchu was created with large stones brought up from the river below.
Machu Picchu is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World
