Scarce early American produced map, among a handful relating to Africa done in the U.S. prior to the year 1800. As noted by W&B, Low has altered the imprint line across the bottom to reflect his re-issuance of the 18th century plate in c.1807.
Pilgrimage track to Mecca shown across Arabia. Profusion of place names, including some fanciful names such as Apollodopolis, Aphroditopolis and best of all, crocodilopolis. Note along red sea locates a mountain where "oil of petrol" is found.
Map displays light to moderate age spotting but yet retains a pleasing age patina. Original fold line as issued.
