In this lecture, I dive into the plants referenced in Middle Earth, specifically a deep reading of The Hobbit! By inferring from the plant life Tolkien brings into his storyworld, I apply a biogeographical lens to teach basic concepts within the field.
A quick note regarding Cucumbers/Pickles in Middle Earth. Thanks to one of the attendees, when Tolkien wrote in The Hobbit about 'pickles' the species he was referencing was probably onions, shallots, beets, cauliflower, courgettes, or French beans! A great point and shows my bias towards 21st century American English/culture rather than early 20th century British English/culture. If anyone spots other errors, please reach out to me!
