Garbage collection was potentially deadly work for a dustman in Victorian London! Not only was it dirty, but dangerous to health. Men, women and children laboured long hours collecting and sorting dust and rubbish, which was hard physical work - there was certainly no mechanical assistance in the 19th Century, like modern refuse collectors have today.
