President Trump visited the Philippines to meet with President Duterte, who Trump has praised for doing a great job in his war on drugs. This “great job” has involved mass killings of Filipino citizens who were thought to use drugs. When asked if the two presidents discussed the extra-judicial killings, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “Human rights briefly came up in the context of the Philippines’ fight against illegal drugs.” However, Duterte’s spokesman, Harry Roque, denied these talks. Trump “appeared sympathetic and did not have any official position on the matter and was merely nodding his head, indicating that he understood the domestic problem that we faced on drugs. The issue of human rights did not arise; it was not brought up,” Roque said.
