Wondering about starting out as a translator? At The Translator's Studio, we're doing a series of interviews with established translators and translators who are just starting out. Their stories will help you figure out the path you need to take when it comes to starting out as a translator.

In this video, Gwenydd Jones interviews Ross Edwards, an up-and-coming translator and copyeditor, and one of our former students.

Ross talks about starting out as a translator by transitioning from learning Spanish into learning how to translate and how to improve his writing skills. He mentions how he subtitled for TED before he began getting paid translation work.

Ross has some great insight on the importance of using feedback and of mastering of the art of translation to ensure a steady workflow. He emphasises the diverse skill set translators develop and how he doesn't see machine translation as a threat. His thoughts will be useful for people starting out as a translator and for translators with experience.
