The unfair policies of the British colonial rule discouraged the import of Indian fabrics and instead flooded the Indian markets with low-cost machine made fabrics.
Indian weavers and artisans lost livelihood and got pushed into poverty.
During the freedom struggle, Gandhi encouraged Indians to boycott foreign goods, weave their yarn and wear it with pride to establish and maintain the heritage of the country.
This movement proved to be an economic masterstroke in breaking the back of the British textile industry and it’s exploitative nature.
After Independence, the Indian government established the Khadi, Village and Industries Commission (KVIC) which provides employment to India’s weavers and artisans. And that’s where I got this saree from.
