The Wayuu have lived on the La Guajira peninsula for more than 2000 years. The dry, desert-like climate of the region in the border area between Colombia and Venezuela has always demanded a high level of adaptability from them. Now, the tenacity they have demonstrated over the past centuries is currently being put under even more severe challenges. Water is becoming scarcer. Climate change, coal mining, and the encroachment of Western culture threaten the traditional life of the indigenous community. The fates of the people affected are just as varied as the strategies they are using to extricate themselves from their plight. What unites them all are demands for the basics: The right to clean water and a dignified life. Are these demands being heeded? What is the role of local, national and international politics in this? One thing is certain: it is not too late to do something.
