This lesson teaches students about the role of campaign contributions and costs in America’s political system. Students will learn about how the rising costs of campaigns has changed the political landscape of the United States. Students will learn how this has required candidates to spend more time raising donations, limited the opportunity to run for political office, encouraged the development of PACs, and given increased influence to special interest groups. Students will also learn how rising costs have led to calls for campaign finance reform with limits on donations. While this lesson was designed for students taking the Civics SOL State Exam, it will work for any civics or U.S. government classes.
I would welcome feedback from any teacher on how to improve these videos or lessons: jeffraymond2002@yahoo.com.
Like most of the videos on Mr. Raymond’s Civics Academy’s lessons, this video ends with a review “quiz.” Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans, worksheets, smartboard files and activities, are available at Teachers Pay Teachers.
As a civics teacher, I have often looked for civics YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. While they might be a little basic for AP Government students, they could serve as a refresher of basic concepts and content. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US Citizens. I have also been reached by parents whose children are taking Florida Virtual School’s (FLVS) Civics class.
