Reading 1: Eccl 3:1-11
Resp: Ps 144:1b and 2abc, 3-4
Gospel: Luke 9:18-22
Memorial of Saint Vincent de Paul, Priest
Lectionary: 453
Reading 1: Eccl 3:1-11
All things have their time, and everything under heaven continues during its appointed season. A time to be born, and a time to die. A time to plant, and a time to uproot what was planted. A time to kill, and a time to heal. A time to tear down, and a time to build up. A time to weep, and a time to laugh. A time to mourn, and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them. A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing. A time to gain, and a time to lose. A time to keep, and a time to discard. A time to tear, and a time to sew. A time to be silent, and a time to speak. A time to love, and a time to hate. A time for war, and a time for peace.
What more does a person gain from their labor? I have seen the burden God has given to humans to keep them occupied. He has made everything beautiful in its time, and he has also placed eternity in their hearts, yet they cannot fathom the work God has done from beginning to end.
Responsorial Psalm: Ps 144:1b and 2abc, 3-4
R. (1) Blessed be the Lord, my Rock!
Blessed be the Lord my God, my mercy, my refuge, my support, my deliverer, my protector, in whom I have hoped.
R. Blessed be the Lord, my Rock!
Lord, what is man, that you are mindful of him? Or the son of man, that you make account of him? Man is like vanity; his days pass away like a shadow.
R. Blessed be the Lord, my Rock!
Alleluia: Mk 10:45
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Son of Man came to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: Luke 9:18-22
And it happened that, when Jesus was praying alone, his disciples also were with him, and he questioned them, saying: “Who do the multitudes say that I am?” But they answered by saying: “John the Baptist. But some say Elijah. Yet truly, others say that one of the prophets from before has risen again.” Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” In response, Simon Peter said, “The Christ of God.”
But speaking sharply to them, he instructed them not to tell this to anyone, saying, “For the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the leaders of the priests and the scribes, and be killed, and on the third day rise again.”
