Weaver Bird
At the start of mating season, the male of this species begins the daunting task of building elaborately woven nests. If their nest is impressive enough a female will come by and choose to mate with that male. This intricate ritual takes about 5 months to complete and is truly a labor of love. Each nest starts out as a knot in a single blade of grass and from there the Weaver\constructs a circular structure around it, these structures can become increasingly intricate and complex, with some nests being smaller and others enormous.
But all of them are said to be 100% waterproof and routinely survive large storms. Due to the incredible strength of their nests, the 57 species of Weaverbird can be found all over the world all with their own unique variation on nest architecture including double-walled nests and the sociable weavers of Africa who builds massive apartment-like communal nests capable of housing 100-300 copulating couples. Sounds like college. If you thought these tiny communal nesters were
impressive just wait until we get to #1 an animal many people own but don’t know the real truth about!
Paper Wasp
Typically wasps are viewed as something of an unwanted pest, and never receive near the credit that bees do for activities such as pollinating and nest building. But the paper wasp is the perfect example of what these amazing little creatures can do when they aren’t ruining your barbeque. Unlike the Weavers who use existing parts of nature to create their home, the paper wasp finds old wood, fences, and other structures to bite chunks of wood off of.
The wood is then chewed into a paste-like pulp that is formed into the walls and numerous chambers of the finished nest. A completed nest will have over 200 honeycomb chambers. Despite the vast amount of work necessary to produce one of these nests, the wasps stick around just long enough to birth the next generation before moving on and repeating the entire process over again.
