On Friday (April 14), U.S. President Joe Biden delivered a speech in Ballina, his ancestral hometown located in the west of Ireland. Standing in front of St Muredach's Cathedral, Biden praised the Good Friday Agreement for bringing peace and progress to the entire island of Ireland. He also expressed his gratitude towards the Irish people for opening their homes to Ukrainian refugees.
Throughout his trip, Biden has shared his love for Ireland and his Irish heritage, often recounting tales from his grandparents and parents. Despite a few missteps, he has connected with the people by speaking to them on a personal level. He concluded his speech in Ballina with a nod to the county's bittersweet sporting slogan, urging the Gaelic football team to win the national championship for the first time since 1951: "Mayo for Sam!"
Before Biden's arrival in Ballina, thousands of people had lined up in the town centre, hoping to catch a glimpse of the U.S. leader. Despite the rain and alternating bright sunshine, they waited patiently for his arrival. At 80 years old, Biden is already the oldest serving U.S. president, and some are keeping a close eye on his performance on the campaign trail. Nonetheless, many regard him as a fatherly figure.
Interestingly, Biden's great-great-great-grandfather, Edward Blewitt, helped build St Muredach's Cathedral in the 1820s. Blewitt emigrated to the United States from Ballina in 1815 with his wife and eight children and assisted in planning the city of Scranton, Biden's hometown, which is twinned with Ballina.
