Afghanistan hasn't had a national army since the Soviets occupied the country in the 1980s. One of NATO's main tasks and a pillar of its exit strategy is building a credible army, so that Afghans can defend themselves. Building a modern army is a massive undertaking, and a lack of mid-level leadership experience leaves a big gap in the force. Jennifer Glasse traveled to Afghanistan and filed this report for VOA
