Turns out the basic whiplash/aerospike Mk2 made orbit easily, so this becomes a how-to for the basics of Single Stage To Orbit (SSTO) craft. Whiplashes and aerospikes open out in the 550-science tier - sadly you won't be making a reliable spaceplane until you get there.
