So How important is end range training, large range of motion, mobility drills, & stretching? NOT important at all & in fact can oftentimes be counterproductive. Case in point, I have NFL QB Taylor Heinicke (as well as all of my athletes) do zero end range training, traditional mobility drills, or stretching. Instead we simply perform 90 deg eccentric isometrics. That’s because the research is very clear that pushing your mobility boundaries is the single worst thing you can do for injury prevention, athletic performance, & muscle function.
All of my athletes including Taylor have experienced scenarios where they’ve needed significant mobility yet they don’t get injured. Instead their body’s perform & hold up significantly better than those who constantly do mobility & end range flexibility work.
The mainstream fitness industry has continued to perpetuate a very common myth & misinformation that to handle extreme positions we must train those positions otherwise our body’s won’t be able to handle them when we’re faced with them. This is absolutely false & could not be further from the truth.
In fact training those extreme positions is a surefire way to increase potential risk of injury. If you want to optimize your mobility, muscle function, athletic performance, & also your ability to handle extreme ROM when your body periodically needs them in extreme circumstances then use 90 deg Eccentric Isometrics.
