BERANDA: BACK TO THE ROOTS
by MODERNSPACE
Beranda; described in Indonesian as an open roofed-space, without walls, located on the side or front of the house, usually used as a place to gather and relax before entering the home.
Beranda is an important part of a house for it not only characterizes a building as a house, Beranda is the beginning of when we know how one house has a personality that is different from other houses. Here we unwind, greet, and welcome our friends and neighbors in warmth. Entering a Beranda will take us through the journey of being at home and thus remind us of who we are.
Taking the wisdom from one of Indonesian vernacular houses, we created Beranda to remind us of our home, our roots. With the use of scaffolding structure, the installation is positioned steadily in the center, allowing us to see not only the exploding vernacular house but also the detailed components that make it all come together.
It is this rich relationship between the scaffolding structure and the installed installation that reveals our identity as Indonesian. We, as a nation of Indonesia, are individuals who live as neighbors, who support each other and embrace each other’s uniqueness to build this country together.
Just like how the light structure in this project works together to support the heavy structure in the center, we too are to take it as an example of how an impossible task becomes possible if we are willing to coexist with others, working together, and inherently generates the spirit of collaboration. Similarly, the exploded heavy structure in the center further shows us that it is not just one but many various components working coherently to achieve structural stability.
We hope that through this installation, our Beranda can take us back to our roots as Indonesians.
Now, let’s go home to our Beranda.
