16mm Film - Boy of a Frontier Fort - USA 1958
Written by: W. Linwood Chase
The film follows the experiences and daily life of a young boy and his family on a frontier fort in the 1790's. It discusses the role of forts in early settlements and shows a preparation for defense against an anticipated Indian attack. It also illustrates how pioneers relied upon their skills, ingenuity, and resourcefulness to supply their needs.
Young Daniel Knight and his family moved into the Ohio Valley in the 1790's. Through his eyes, viewers observe everyday activities in the fortified settlement. Danny visits craftsmen in the community and men at work in the nearby fields and forests. The threat of an Indian attack disrupts the calm routine. The blockhouse now becomes the center of activity. Although the threatened attack does not take place, after some uncertain hours, the excitement of this episode serves to arouse the interest of elementary school viewers in frontier life. They will also readily identify themselves with the experiences of one of their own age group.
